Create an ultralight wind shell tailor-made for fast and light mountain pursuits.

The Approach.

Like most performance-oriented projects, the fabric choice was just as important as the design and feature-set. Seeking superior water-repellency for what would become an essential for fast and light mountain pursuits, Black Diamond here began its research into and experimentation with Green Theme Technologies’ innovative non-toxic, water-free and durable EMPEL DWR technology. Black Diamond was one of the first brands to work with its mill partners to embrace the technology, despite the initial challenges it presented in cost and supply chain. The Distance Wind Shell conveniently packs into its chest pocket, the placement of which is high on the upper chest so larger items lay comfortably above the bust apex. With minimal weight and packability a key focus, a thin and low-profile elastic construction was utilized at the cuff and hood opening, while a single point of adjustment was utilized at both the hem and back hood.
