Cirque Shell:
Black Diamond
The Challenge.
At the time, Black Diamond’s alpine climbing and trekking kit consisted only of traditional hardshells. With the introduction of a double-weave softshell option for mild climates, the goal was to design for movement without sacrificing much protection.
The Approach.
The fabric selection focused on finding a double-weave softshell with 4-way stretch, a good amount of body to communicate rugged durability, and superior beading of water to inspire confidence in the event of unexpected precipitation. The design was kept sleek and modern, with a focus on low-profile elements such as conceal chest and hand pocket zippers and elasticated hem and cuffs for compatibility with a range of gear. Unique darting to create the raglan-style sleeve optimized both movement and layerability.
According to Rock & Ice magazine, “The Cirque may not be BD’s fanciest, lightest or burliest shell, but nine times out of ten it’s the jacket I’m going to shove into the top of my pack… I’m most impressed with how well this jacket fits under a pack, as well as the freedom of movement it allows in all kinds of endeavors.”
